As comfortably one of the best female tennis players in the world, Simona Halep is a fine example of just how competitive WTA tennis is. After an impressive run so far in 2019, the Romanian has suffered a huge shock – losing to an unseeded teenager in Amanda Anisimova.
Losing 6-2, 6-4 to the 17-year-old, she continues her incredible run to the Semi Finals. This makes her the youngest semi-finalist for a Grand Slam since Nicole Vaidisova done so in 2007. When asked about what she thought of what is most likely the biggest win of her career to date, Anisimova said: “This is honestly more than I could ever have asked for,
“If I didn’t look nervous it’s because I wasn’t.
“I don’t think it will sink in, at least not for today. It’s crazy. I really can’t believe the result. Getting the opportunity to play against Simona, that’s amazing, but how it ended is even crazier to me.”
It’s a truly spectacular win, and one that immediately puts her in a position of being a minor favourite for the last four. Indeed, she will be taking on the impressive Australian, Ashleigh Barty, who defeated Madison Keys 6-3, 7-5.
While the run to the semis was never one to be expected, the young starlet Anisimova has all the chance of going all the way to the final. In such an open and unexpected run, it would be impossible to limit what’s achievable.
