News

WTA tennis is always introducing new stars and big names to the world of tennis, and one example of this would be Elise Mertens. The impressive Belgian has made a huge impression on the sport, and her rise to the next round of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China, is no surprise. She overcame Maria Sakkari in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory to seal her progression to the next round of the game.

Throughout the match, she overcame considerable adversity to make sure that she could see the match through. indeed, with eight double faults, it was a match that looked like it could be marred by her lack of concentration. However, she did manage to convert seven breakpoints, playing well enough to eventually take control and blot out the mistakes that she had been making.

She’s likely to take on Aryna Sabalenka in the next round-robin part of the event, with this being what is essentially a Quarter Final event taking place. The Belarusian made short work of Sakkari herself, winning comfortably across straight sets to seal the victory.

Speaking to the press after the match, Mertens spoke about the competition rules that will decide who goes to the last four, saying: “To win this match is actually a relief to play Aryna next, because you know if you lost the match in two sets of three sets it’s another situation,”

It’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top in what should be a pulsating match.
