Karolina Pliskova was able to win her first Purple Group win when she was taking place at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China. This came after her opponent, Bianci Andreescu, has to pull out of the tournament due to injury. Trailing by a set when the decision was made to call it a day, her injury seemed to strike up very early on in the match.
This means that No. 2 seed Pliskova could pick up her first win at the WTA Finals. The No.4 seed had suffered the injury, and then went on to lose 6-3. After that, though, she had to retire due to the injury. Having started well, going 2-0 up, she then started to suffer from over-stretching herself when going for a wide serve.
Speaking after the match, Pliskova said about the situation: “”I didn’t know it was really that bad,
“Of course, I feel sorry for her… I just felt I’m really in the match. I was ready to fight today, not to give it to her easy. Doesn’t matter how bad injured she is, how bad she feels, I just wanted to win, get this victory to keep myself in the tournament, which happened, of course not in the best way.”
While it might somewhat dampen the experience, it’s interesting to see her opponent so magnanimous even in victory. The No.2 seed will now have to take on Simona Halep. With their record at 1-1 going into the final round-robin match, there is much to play for.
